December 8, 2024 - Second Sunday of Advent

"Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." Luke 3:5-6

Reflect, today, upon whether or not your soul is like that dry and barren desert, detached from all the false and passing satisfactions of this world, and prepared to soak up the mercy and grace of God alone. Repentance brings forth detachment, and detachment prepares the soul for God. When one is truly detached and free from the many obstacles to God, then the road from God to your soul will be straight and easily travelled.

Reflect upon your soul today and where you see unhealthy attachments. Repent with all your heart so that you are among those most fully ready for an abundance of the grace and mercy of God.

As we prepare for Christmas, you are invited to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). Fr Nev and four visiting priests will be available during the evening to administer the sacrament.

St Vincent de Paul Update: Christmas Appeal 2024

Thank you to all our Parishioners and School communities for your generosity and kindness in supporting this year’s Christmas Appeal. Your support will bring hope, joy and much needed assistance to families and individuals facing challenges this holiday season.

Through your thoughtful donations and efforts, we will be able to provide gifts, food and essentials, ensuring that many in our community experience the love and light of Christ this Christmas.

A special thank you to our schools – Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School, St Augustine’s College and St Anne’s Catholic School – for their enthusiastic participation and to everyone who helped organise and contribute to this meaningful initiative. Your generosity embodies the true spirit of Christmas. Photos show the amazing giving that has been provided. And to add to this generosity, St Augustine’s College presented a cheque of $5,300 to our President, Vicky Hutchinson at this week’s school assembly.

Encounter Springfield is completing their fourth year up and running and have seen some major successes in 2024. Their highest attendance has seen fifty-six young people at youth, and countless lives changed through an encounter with Jesus. One of the biggest victories of the year includes taking nineteen young people to Ignite Conference in September, most of them being leaders. Encounter has successfully established and grown a full band that plays on Friday nights, as well as a Youth Mass band that plays the second Sunday of every month at the 11am mass. Thanks to the help and support of you, OLSC parish, Encounter was able to hold two successful food sale fundraisers, with proceeds up to $3,000 combined.

In 2025, we say farewell to our Youth Coordinator, Andrew Wendt, who along with his team has pioneered Youth ministry in our parish this year. We cannot wait for what fruit Encounter will bring next year and look forward to continuing to grow our young people to know Jesus and live the Gospel.

Thank you Andrew for your incredible dedication and impact on this Youth ministry. Through your hard work, creativity and unwavering support, you have truly made a difference in the lives of our young people. We appreciate your gifts and time you have put in to gather and love these high schoolers and to give them a regular encounter with God. Blessings, Fr Nev.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our Hospitality Ministry Volunteers and Parishioners who contributed to the success of last week-end’s bake sale. Whether you baked delicious treats, helped with setup and clean-up, or supported us by purchasing our goodies, your efforts made a significant difference.

Thanks to your generosity and hard work, we not only enjoyed a morning filled with community spirit and delicious meals but also raised over $1,300 towards the cost of our Robot Vacuum Cleaner.

We are blessed to have such a supportive and dedicated parish family. Thank you!

Request for Accommodation

We have received a request for assistance for shared accommodation in the Greater Springfield area for a teacher who is taking a new job at St Augustine’s College as Middle Leader for Science next year. She’s hoping to move in by 16 January 2025 for a period of six months until she can buy a home. She is willing to pay rent and money towards food, electricity, internet and water. She is single and is open to living with any company situation. Reeja is currently an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish, Gladstone and is looking forward to being a volunteer within our Parish in various ministries.
